Do you realize that "well-spoken" is only ever said about African Americans? There are levels of racism here that I'm not going to deconstruct for you, writer and editors, you are smart enough to figure it out for yourselves. Going forward please avoid this phrase.

Actually, many non-black people are described as well-spoken. It is said of me sometimes, and I'm white. While the phrase has a history of being used as a form of coded-language-racism, throwing the accusation out that its use here is an employment of that particular "sign" here without explanation is unfair and lazy. Since not all uses of the label are racist, you can assert that its use here is racist only by making a claim to speak authoritatively in the matter. Derrida would not approve of the latter. Regurgitating a cliché isn't a sign of insight, wisdom, or intelligence. Ditto for making an assertion rather than an argument.

I think it is wonderful that we are informed that this young man is "well-spoken." Otherwise, we would have had no choice but to assume that this ambitious, thoughtful, artistically-inclined, educated young African-American male spoke like a gang-banger! Thank you for providing this public service!
