Hope of relocation? Haven't you heard. It's already been relocated. Just go sit by the Wagon Bridge or anywhere along County Road #21 in Prior Lake. The race and noise continues non stop 24/7, 365 days a year. At least when the races are done at Raceway the noise stopped. Not in Prior Lake.

Eventually the land beneath these old racetracks, which were originally built in the boondocks, becomes more valuable than the facility itself (unfortunately). Same thing happened to Hialeah Speedway near Miami; it opened in 1954 and closed in 2005 to make way for a Target and a Lowes. Good luck trying to build a new one these days; most of the people within 10 miles of the place would start screaming louder than a full field of racecars taking the green flag.

I was a pit crew member for the women figure 8 racer Margie Bechrich #32, once old enough I took over her number and raced myself for 10 years. Today I find myself crew chief for the #13 Stanley racing team Hobby Stock car. I have raced with many names, Dick Mohlin, Barta (he's still there). The names over the years on and off the track are amazing, Bill Woodworth (woody)! Some legends, much talent, many memories. At 16 years old, police officer Jerry Poole strongly suggested I race on the track and not his streets. Closing this track is a serious and permanent mistake because never will the current permitting processes of government allow it to be financially possible to open a new track. I understand the track owners position, I support the free markets, Its just a huge loss to so many. Matt Lehman Shakopee City Council past driver, past pit-crew, current Crew chief.

Motor sports is going the way of golf. Sorry to say, but they have both outlived their usefulness. NOBODY I know even considers them viable anymore.

Why doesn't the city buy it and lease it out to the racing board and whatever else. Race sleds in the winter, and whatever else comes up. This is one of those things you should preserve, 'cause once it's gone, it's gone forever.

Why would they build another similar size track when there is another venue with Elko Speedway, in Elko New Market. It's in Scott County as well just south of Lakeville (about 20min from Raceway Park). I would hope while even loosing such a major landmark as Raceway people would still support the local racing at another home town race track.
