Illinois senator shouldn't bully Minnesota think tank

The Center of the American Experiment received a letter last week from U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, Democrat of Illinois. We are normally thrilled to hear from any elected official, given the fact that we are a policy organization.

The Center for the American Experiment is an embarrassment to Conservatism. As the home of Katherine Kersten, Mitch Pearlstein, and various other non-entities of right-wing thought, it's really nothing more than a corporate-funded welfare program for unsuccessful academics.

Sure, I don't agree with them, but what else do Kersten and Pearlstein do, other than work for the Center for the American Experiment and write for the StarTribune? They don't write books, they don't do research, they aren't prominent for any reason at all except for providing voices for the echo-chamber that does nothing but quote, cite and tout each other to provide the illusion of an active intellectual community.

Sen. Durbin has been far to tolerant of corporate intervention into politics for far too long. Now it seems that he's become annoyed by fraudulent faux-academic money-laundering operations, whose only function is to support each other. ALEC being the successful operations wing, and the Center for the American Experiment being one of many purpose-created cheerleaders.

Oh how the Teapublicans hate it when people speak out against their radical agenda. For too long, these "Think tanks," financed by the Koch brothers and other large fossil fuel interests, have been able to spread their militant propaganda unchallenged.

The Center of the American Experiment is a joke, why shouldn't they be questioned?

Swmnguy-"They don't write books, they don't do research, they aren't prominent for any reason at all except for providing voices for the echo-chamber that does nothing but quote, cite and tout each other to provide the illusion of an active intellectual community." So what's your point since 90%+ (est) of writers fall into this category of not writing books, doing research... That goes for the right and left. The only reason you think the left's opinions are "intellectual" is because you agree with them. No different than conservatives agreeing with Rush Limbaugh, or liberals agreeing with Bill Moyers. I think the writer of the op-ed piece has something that is important and impartial, yet personal. No reason they can't express it in the paper without having their intellect brought into play. Calling conservatives dumb is on page one of the liberals playbook and is a response of diminishing returns to most readers. It doesn't extend the conversation and is bad form, yet unfortunately all too expected.

The Center of the American Experiment should be ashamed for pandering to the greedy one percent at the expense of the other 99% of the people in this country.

Regardless of what one thinks of the Center of the American Experiment, neither they nor any group should be tarred with the Martin-Zimmerman debacle and stand-your-ground implications. We need term limits: one six year term so senators can focus on important business and not pompous and self- serving grand standing.

Wow. I don't know what is scarier. Dick Durbin and his unconstitutional and outrageous attempts at intimidation or the commenters who have read this article and agree with him.

"They don't write books, they don't do research, they aren't prominent for any reason at all except for providing voices for the echo-chamber that does nothing but quote, cite and tout each other to provide the illusion of an active intellectual community."---Since this claim sounded dubious I checked out their website. They actually have a whole section devoted to books and policy studies.

"The Center of the American Experiment is a joke, why shouldn't they be questioned?"---Because they have nothing to answer to Congress for. Durbin needs to find something more useful to do with his time.

Mitch was a tool long before he arrived in Minnesota...a lap dog and lickspittle who barks out random phrases from William F. Buckley's Firing Line show. Anyone who would give a pulpit to crackpots and racists like Bachmann and Krauthammer doesn't have that much integrity.
