Waiting this long to close locks on the Mississippi River to stop Asian carp from infesting the state’s northern waters is among the dumbest stunts Minnesota has pulled.

How about a meaningful quarantine on lakes and rivers that are infested with zebra mussels. If a farm has animals with an infectious disease the USDA immediately isolates it. Given the value of recreational use doesn't it make sense to isolate lakes that are infested? If you use a boat on an infested lake it must be certified that it is cleaned of zebra mussels (or whatever other organism we need to isolate). We boaters are slowly but surely spreading these invasive species. We can't blame congress for inaction; it is us!

Minnesota has limits on how many fish a person can catch. The limits exist to prevent fish from going extinct. If Minnesota wants to get rid of Asian carp, why does the state have a limit on how many Asian carp a fisherman can take home?

Heyya larsonra5948... I've been wondering that for years. Seems to me that the only way to prevent most invasive species from spreading is quarantine. Even that doesn't guarantee success but it is much more effective than any other measures that are taken. I'm all for it. So is my family and we all eat fish from MN lakes twice a week.

"Waiting this long to close some combination of the Upper or Lower St. Anthony locks, or the lock at Ford Dam, on the Mississippi River to stop Asian carp from infesting the state’s northern waters, is among the dumbest stunts Minnesota has pulled." What a terribly misleading and unfair statement. Minnesota isn't pulling some "stunt" here. Minnesota isn't failing to take action. As the article latter notes, it is Congress (which doesn't do much of anything these days) that needs to act. Don't blame our state in your first sentence, much less imply that it's not acting on purpose by suggesting it's engaged in some misguided "stunt". Place the blame where it belongs. Blame a do-nothing Congress.

Good article. This is not a fact...but I boat the St.Croix Stillwater south to Afton area. I have seen fish jumping way out of the water..and I wonder (as some others are too) if these are not Asian carp.

Hey edinawater, check your regs again - there is no limit on carp, Asian or otherwise.

Please google biotic-resistance we have native predators for these and the zebra mussels barriers are an obstacle not a cure. Predators control what's what in any lake, they need to be abundant. All baby fish have predators including Asian Carp!

As usual with all things government, too little too late and distracted by anyone waving money around.

I agree Dennis. They keep doing studies and will wait until it is too late and then try to solve the problem. They will then decide too late that maybe we should have shut the barn door. Vote them all out....

Agreed, weld the lock doors shut and be done with it. One small correction though.... They do not "pump" water into the locks, it's all done with gravity.
