Sid Hartman: Rookie linebacker Mauti healthy at start of Vikings training camp

  • Article by: SID HARTMAN , Star Tribune

Michael Mauti not only could solve the Vikings’ lack of depth at linebacker, but he could also be the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year if he could get playing time, on the basis of what he did in college when he was healthy.

Great news about this Mauti. Had a chance to watch a lot of tape, of his playing time at Penn St. I think it was a good reach, drafting this kid. When all the hype about the Vikes drafting this MLB, or that MLB, was going through everyones' mind; I thought, what a shame this Kid was injured. I believe that he was a top 2-3 college MLB, before the last knee problem. I was surprised that he was even drafted. The biggest surprise is that he is actually at training camp. I don't know if he will become a starting NFL MLB. Who knows if he will get hurt again, or stay healthy. All I can say is when he is healthy, he is as good as any MLB, that was just drafted. I'm sure that the Vikes had every medical report on him. I'm sure that they would not have drafted him unless there was a positive report about his surgeries, and rehabs. Who knows. I wish the kid luck, and hope he can help the team in the near future. GO VIKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy to have the U spend money on student rec/intramural facilities.

Nice to hear that the Regents at the UofM are supporting the students with the funding of improved health/rec facilities. The $303 million football stadium (used for four Big 10 games yearly) is of no value to the 50,000 students on campus from August to June. Lets start worrying about their needs for a change.

Oh how terrible, spending $ to up grade the rec/health facilities for the common college student who most have to pay their own way thru school. I am sure Sid will say if there is enough $ for that the U should have enough for athletics.

The athletic department just turned over the golf course to the rec-sports department.Athletics bought and paid for the golf course with no help from the university. The land that is sits on is some of the most valuable in the twin cities. The athletic department could have sold that land and had more than enough money to pay for all the improvements they needed. The University of Minnesota has stripped the athletic department of most of their assets and refuses to give them a dime. This program will never succeed unless the university starts giving back just a little of what they have taken.By the way the Mens athletic department bought and paid for Coffman union, all the land that the welcome center, and rec-spotrs sits on.I almost forgot the land that aquatic center and the old field house were also given to the university.

I just remembered the also gave the university cook hall. You see all those parking lots around Williams arena and the mens and womens hockey arenas all bought and paid for by the athletic department.Kicker is parking and the University make millions every year and the athletic dept dosent get a dime, as a matter of fact the athletics has to pay for every spot they use.

Look around the Big Ten and if we can't be competitive with our facities then join the MIAC or the NSIC unless they want to go independent.

Krugerscott: as I recall, the Aquatic Center cost $19M, of which $13M came from the state or from student fees. The Union was remodeled in the early 1970's and again about 10 years ago; the latter cost about $70M, which came from student fees. Not sure I see how land donations that occurred in the 1930's and 40's are relevant here, especially since the University has on occasion had to lend money to the athletic department.

I haven't heard Sid boast lately that the U of M Athletic Department is self sufficient. How can they be with multi-million dollar buyouts for has-been coaches. Likewise, he probably FORGOT that in the late 1960s the University screwed the average student when they took mandatory Intramural Sports money paid by all students to build the Bierman Athletic Building, used only by the varsity athletes.
