It’s tough to gauge public sentiment these days. Online, anger dominates.

One shouldn't have to defend a person for staying home with his wife and new born twin daughters, when the babies are in incubators. That one does is a sad commentary on the values of some Twins fans.

Great column, Jim. Any fan critical of Mauer for staying with his babies who were in incubators should go cheer for Ryan Braun.

"When the Twins took the sideburned kid from St. Paul with the first pick in the 2001 draft instead of celebrated college pitcher Mark Prior,..." When the Twins did this. Oh, my God. Prior was in The Show in no time, and the complaints rained down. Where are those folks now? Same ones complaining about Mauer. Seen Mark Prior lately, boys?

This is a sports column. Please stick to it. When the contract was signed he was the second highest paid player in baseball. He is now the sixth highest paid player in baseball. At no point in his career has he been the best player in baseball. He currently is nowhere near the sixth best player in baseball at this time. Since this contract went into effect the Twins have lost 90 plus games every year. There isn't a team in MLB that would take his contract...period. The sooner these absurd justifications of his contract stop, the better. The Twins made a huge mistake on this deal. is it too much to ask for people to admit that?

Agree with everyone who knows that family is more important than sports. What kind of defective human that could think otherwise is beyond me. And to pazaluna, Mauer has won multiple batting championships and an MVP, he isn't the problem. He has paid for himself. It's the starting pitching and other players around him that the owners have failed to deliver to create a winner. Apparently you don't know much about baseball or you wouldn't have posted such a dumb comment.

BallFour@ The article was about Mauer staying home with his new twin daughters....which is exactly what he should have done, kudos for Joe. Give it a break.

Stop stroking Mauer. He provides zero leadership and only marginal clutch hitting. His stats are impressive, but much like Kevin Garnett, he is the wrong guy to rest your hopes upon.

Before anyone comments on his lack of clutch hitting, can we please have the facts? Mauer's a career .323 hitter. With no one on base, he's a career .311 hitter With RISP he's a career .338 hitter. With RISP and 2 outs he's a career .348 hitter, his highest situational batting average. Believe it or not haters, he actually performs best in the "clutch" and all those 2-out singles with no one on when the Twins are trailing 8-2? Ya...they don't happen nearly as often as you think they do. Facts are fun!

Sigh, too late: CAR836 coming through with the nonsense. Mauer's worst batting average comes with no one on base. His best comes with runners on and two outs. What more do you want/why can't people understand this?

Great article by Souhan. Glad Joe got to spend a few extra days with his babies, which is far more important than baseball. Also, I knew that this article would bring out the Mauer bashers. It would be nice if people who post under made up names at least would have a fact or two once in awhile regarding Joe's ability to hit in the clutch, which is actually very good. Also, I am sure all of these people are around the Twins a lot and know a lot about Joe's "leadership ability". Give it a rest.
