4 for 12 ... ouch.

Hmmm, and yet Mike Wobshall on thins 4-12 is a "solid day." Here are his ramblings... "Quarterback Christian Ponder had a solid day leading the offense, and finished with a bang as he hit receiver Jarius Wright for a touchdown on the final play of practice, which was a 2nd and 10 from the 13-yardline with 3 seconds on the clock." I guess he must not have seen the first 11 passes.

Useually the 2nd string QB goes against 2 nd stringers as well so let's not forget that fact

Ponder "wobbly". Is that really news to anyone who has watched this weak armed QB the last 2 years?

thome2011Jul. 30, 13 7:25 AM

It bothers me that the Vikings call Cassel the backup automatically. Why not have an open competition and let the best man win? Are they afraid of the result? Maybe don't want to admit they drafted Ponder a couple rounds too early?

I like how this article says, it's tough to judge Ponder's completion rate in ONLY the 3rd day of training camp. True, but judging his college and 2 years in the Pro's. Yep, I still think Ponder is worthless as a starter. Case Closed.

I couldn't agree more with you Thome2011. After the uber-poor play by Ponder in so many games through his first couple of years how could it not be an open competition? Great, reward the failing QB by propping him up. Do you think this is how Belichek, Tomlin, Harbaughs, MCarthy (etc) would approach this? No way. The three year plan for Ponder would have been thrown away by now if not for the vikings winning the last four games of last season. And let's not put those four wins on too high a pedestal: Houston didn't show up to play because their playoff position had already been determined, Packer game at home meant nothing to the Packers but everything for the Vikes, Bears at home (bad team, Ponder threw for 91 yards and a pick), and Rams were awful.

Ponder should have a great year when 8 to 9 guys are watching Petersen on every snap. If he doesn't deliver this year then they need to admit the mistake and cut him. I smell Rivers as QB next year. AP's clock is ticking.

My spirit is 'wobbly' and confused there's no open competition for a QB who has played poorly for 2 seasons. Viking's brass either are poor talent evaluators or can't admit they made a mistake reaching for Ponder. Many other GMs have made worse QB draft with the first and second pick. Open up the competition and move on.

The Vikings should hire Rick Anderson to be the QB coach, then Ponder might make contact more often.
