Lincoln Memorial in Washington, splattered with green paint, reopens after cleanup

WASHINGTON — Someone splattered green paint on the Lincoln Memorial early Friday, but the statue of the 16th president was reopened by nightfall after the paint was washed away.

Handy rule #1 when wrecking iconic public works of art that are there for ALL to enjoy: If you are trying to make "a statement" how about actually making it clear what you are attempting to say. This in no way increases your street cred with anyone.

The mindset that comes with vandalism and tagging escapes me. What possible thrill could come from defacing something beautiful and meaningful. I was in Canyonlands last week and 4 or 5 nitwits had scribbled their names into a rock face containing petroglyphs from 1100 AD.

Who ever is responsible should be required to not only clean up the paint but give the whole Lincoln Memorial a good cleaning plus jail time and continue to clean the Memorial once a year for a few more after the initial cleaning.
