Military perks come under congressional scrutiny

As the Pentagon cuts elsewhere and furloughs workers, some in Congress question military perks.

It's not just people at the top who get housing perks in the military. Even people at almost the lowest levels get housing allowances - and these are TAX FREE. I can understand that housing costs more especially when you're expected to pick up & leave when the military tells you too, but the housing allowance at the very least needs to be taxed, and probably should not aim at covering 100% of housing expenses. After all, we all have to pay housing costs. Perhaps 1/3 - 1/2 of expected housing costs could be paid by the allowance, depending on how expensive housing is in an area. The military also needs to invest in more FINANCIAL PLANNING classes for the enlisted person & any spouse. I've known enlisted people in the military and they spend far more than I do.
