Hax: Sister hates 'the smart one'

Dear Carolyn: I have always been the smart one. The sister was an average student, and I have always excelled in all areas of academia. This sounds conceited, I know, and I’m not writing off my sibling. She has many talents that I simply don’t possess, like the ability to make people feel comfortable.

I just can't believe you "just blame the parents" again. That is so hurtful and in the past used by psychologists for sexuality and other reasons for the reason for issues in the family, especially blame Mom. I am 74, it happened to me when I was young with my younger sister and I tried everything. It also happened with my own children, daughter #3 was just born super intelligent. We did EVERYTHING to make all our children feel important. I have always said grades and accomplishments in life do not come close to being as important as how you treat other people. Bad answer, shame on you for blaming parents!!

Just my opinion but I agree with maryknits; that was a horrible response given.

I usually agree with Carolyn's advice but this response is a stinker. The younger sister may have a personality disorder - and there's not much the other sister can do about it. I was surprised Carolyn blamed the parents and the older sister. It seemed to me the older sister had a reasonable attitude.

The "smart one" should be smart enough to know how to open this conversation up with her sister if she is genuine about changing things. It would be interesting of course to hear the other side of the story. The truth more than likely lies somewhere in the middle.
