For Twins announcer Dick Bremer, more hits than errors

  • Article by: RACHEL BLOUNT , Star Tribune

During high school in Staples, Minn., Dick Bremer took speech classes, which planted the idea of building a career around his voice. His plan worked well.

His style is that of a cheerleader rather than an announcer who adds anything to the enjoyment of the game. Honest criticism and praise is needed during the game.

Is this a paid advertisement by the MN Twins and Fox Sports North?

The Twins have really had good luck finding great announcers and Dick Bremer certainly is a great announcer. I like 'em knowledgeable, neighborly and Minnesota Twins through and through. There is a thousand different places to go if you want to listen to one of the robots do a game.

I'll credit Dick Bremer for a professional sounding voice and staying away from gimmicky 'signature' home run calls, which I absolutely loathe. He also doesn't scream and yell with manufactured enthusiasm, like Gary Thorne in Baltimore and Tom Hamilton in Cleveland. However, his legacy will be tarnished by his near-pathological need to shill for management and unwillingness to offer even a modicum of critical commentary about the home team. In short, he is an insufferable homer, and it hurts his credibility. Reusse wrote a brilliant column several years ago to this effect, and it remains spot on.

BREMER is a homer what do you expect he is from Minnesota.I am sure BREMER wants the twins to win who doesnt?

dbsdbsJul. 8, 1311:17 PM

I will give Bremer credit for knowing baseball, or at least Twins baseball. But I really wish he could be at least a little bit objective. All Twins fans over the past few years have known that the Twins have been a lousy ball club -- only Bremer is unwilling to say that. I much prefer listening to a reporter doing the game than listening to a cheerleader like Bremer.

He is a good announcer and knows the game. But comments like "let's get back to .500 and then shoot for the division lead after the all-star break" have gotta stop. You're calling games for a cellar team, not a division leader. Call it like it is.

Moving away from Minnesota 4 years ago. One of the things I miss is hearing Dick Bremer and Bert on Twins telecasts. Yes, because I am a Twins fan, but because they are entertaining and fun to listen to. Yes they are biased, which when they were winning most people loved. I live in Nashville now and we get Reds, Braves and Cardinals games on a regular basis. I promise you Dick is a complete professional compared to the play by play guys these teams have. I don't think the upper Midwest understands what they have in this duo.

elcerritoJul. 9, 1312:29 AM

No, we understand exactly what we have in "this duo"...we have insufferable, insulting cheer leading, and absurdly unrealistic positive assessments of Twins players and the team that makes enjoyment of watching a Twins telecast impossible. I watch with the sound turned off while listening to the radio broadcast of the game.

what's wrong with dick being a "homer"?...go out for morning coffee and listen to the locals if you want negative talk about Twins losing ways.
