Pa. girl who got new lungs after parents sued over transplant rules develops pneumonia

PHILADELPHIA — A 10-year-old Pennsylvania girl who had a pair of adult-lung transplants after her parents sued to change national rules regarding organ donations has developed pneumonia in her right lung, which her mother described on Monday as "a large setback."

Consider this: as much as you may marvel at the expertise involved in replacing this girl's lungs - twice - realize that every person insured by this girl's insurance company will be paying more to offset the hundreds of thousands of dollars this transplant cost. Those policyholders will also expect similar measures if their doctors even suggest it might give them a few more weeks of life. Where do you draw the line between medical good and medical cost?
