Photo of 19 firefighters killed shows painstaking care, recognition of enormous loss

PRESCOTT, Ariz. — The idea to drape the bodies of 19 dead firefighters in American flags came from Yavapai County Sheriff Scott Mascher, shortly after the men were found dead.

These were brave men and they deserve to be recognized as heroes. Is it permitted to use the American Flag to cover bodies on the ground? Caskets yes, but the ground? I don't know the answer but it doesn't seem to appear anywhere in the flag code. Why this is important: Our flag represents many other heroes who have died for our country. Citizens and governors alike owe it to all of our heroes to know and respect the etiquette of the flag and all it symbolizes.

Personally, I'm glad this photo became public. We all may not be related to these fine gentlemen but their loss was my loss too. The flags made a very hard image so much easier to get my head around. Kudos to the decision to honor them in this way.
