Land of the loons: Majestic bird is visual, audio symbol of North Country

Perhaps no other living creature represents Minnesota like the common loon. From its laughing call on a still summer evening to its frolicking courtship antics, the loon evokes our emotions both aurally and visually.

Love the loon! Nothing better than to be camping and listening to the loon calls. What a beautiful bird!

Yes, I grew up in MN. However, I did not really like water/lakes/etc. and I hated the hot/muggy summers. Just hate it! The one thing that I will always remember is the loons calling, just a wonderful sound. In fact, I got one of those new doorbells that have animal sounds on it - guess what sound did I place on it - of course the loon. If there is one sound I would like to be remembered by, it would be the loon!

I too grew up in MN and miss loon calls. Loved hearing that as a kid on one of the many lakes we vacationed on. My issue with this article is why not include a sound file or at least a link to a loon call? Startribune must realize that many former MN residents frequent this site? It is our link to home.
