How to protect your camp (and food) from bear at BWCA

The “bear walking into camp” portion of the required rules and regulations video, watched by all campers heading into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, is a personal favorite of Dave Seaton’s. “I like watching people’s reaction at that part of the video,” said Seaton, owner of Hungry Jack Outfitters on the Gunflint Trail.

Cliff Jacobsen says to put your pack in the woods, off the trail and keep a clean site. The clean site will avoid attracting them and keeping it off the normal paths reduces the chance they stumble into it. Bears are creatures of habit and as long as you are eating dried food, everthing is double bagged and the bag is well packed and stashed away, they are unlikely to even know its there. I have seen FEW properly hung food packs. Usually end up too close to the ground or the tree. In most sites, it's hard to find two trees of the right girth and distance to make it work. Looks great at the outfitters....

Buy a bear canister. Problem solved, and much more effective and easier than hanging.

Bears can smell flour thru cabin walls--no chance they "won't smell it"" b/c it's off the trail!! Their nose is better than a dogs!!

After wasting time and energy on these cumbersome and often ineffective steps, I found the PEFECT bear repellant. A bear's hearing is very sensitive, and they flee in panic when a strong firecracker is exploded anywhere near them. A cherry bomb or silver salute add nothing to your pack weight and put any nosey bruin on the run.
