This is exactly why the Republicans lost control of the legislature. Narrow, arch conservative positions with no recognition or allowance for a member to vote his or her conscience. If the party does not change this inflexible stance it is likely to remain out of power. Brandon Petersen should be supported for his position, not punished.

No, he needs to do his district a favor and switch to the Dem party. He has no grasp of reality by supporting SSM while families and child outcomes are reeling. Trust me, he got plenty of emails from his constituents. His fallback tagline became, "well, let's work on the issues we agree on." Ahh, no. He got a different tagline tonite, didnt he?

Thank you Senator Petersen, for being a forward looking Republican. I'm sure it was a tough decision, but it was the right decision, and you should feel proud for that.

That's certainly very illustrative of the Republican mentality. If he wasn't a Republican, I'd be inclined to vote for him, because of his courageness-- if he was allowed to run again, but he is and won't be allowed anyway.

The Republican Party in MN is morally bankrupt. They pursued an agenda limiting the rights of tax paying, gay Minnesotans and then tried to change the constitution....all while their leader was having an affair. The party of liberty and freedom is anything but. I applaud Branden Peterson. Apparently you can be fiscally conservative and still be moral. Most Republicans can't seem to do the right thing.

I'm a Republican and I would vote for Petersen again in a heart beat. More politicians need to vote for what is right instead of worrying about their party lines.

The Republican tent is so small that Ronald Reagan would have been kicked out of today's GOP.

Sen. Branden Petersen is on the correct side of history. 20 years from now the people that voted against same-sex marriage will be compared to the Dixiecrats.

If he does not have the Republican endorsement in 2016 due to this vote, then the next logical step would be to withdraw from the Republican party and run as an independent. What is more important, towing the party line or sticking by your principles.
