The Drive: Try before you buy: free rides on the Red Line

Remember the Edgar Winter Group’s song “Free Ride?” That’s what Metro Transit and Minnesota Valley Transit Authority (MVTA) officials are offering on the Red Line this week.

Had a fare foliday on the Blue Line and Many still dont pay. Its an awesome deal when you create Public transit and people do not have to pay. No turnstiles, no valisdation just the threat you might get caught.

It should be noted that having turnstiles and station attendants would actually cost more to MetroTransit than they'd recover in evaded fare revenue. The farebox recovery ratio would go down. There's a calculation for this that's widely known to transit planners.

Whether the passengers pay or not is really not a big issue. Much more important is that there are lots of people aboard.

Why don't they add a stop at Cliff Road? They could put it on the on-ramp with good sidewalk connections. It would take 1 extra minute to serve a major commercial area. Wait a sec, this would add more ridership and revenue, nevermind.
