I know of another such scam tech support company. Its called the Geek Squad. If someone is good at IT, they will work at higher paid and lower stress corporate jobs. You get what you pay for.

I'm still amazed at how many people surfing the net don't have rudimentary knowledge of computer technology. It's not that hard to take basic precautions and learn to use numerous anti- virus/spyware programs or apps like ghostery and no scripts.

@tituspullo: "I'm still amazed at how many people surfing the net don't have rudimentary knowledge of computer technology." This isn't so much a problem of tech savvy, but of social engineering. I'm willing to bet that most of the successful targets of such scams are the old and the technologically-challenged. After all, the scam described relies on the trust in the human voice of the scammer and the invoking of a widely-known tech company name (Microsoft is one of the most commonly used). No anti-virus program can counter that.

Anyone who calls you looking for your credit card number is engaged in a scam and/or fraud until proven otherwise.

The best solution is for these non-tech savvy people who just use email and Facebook is to get an iPad. The generic PC is too complicated for many people to properly maintain.
