Another failed plan by the U of M. Take premium research fields and build housing. Wow how innovative. New jobs, yea right, how many McDonalds and Walmarts do we need?

The 1990s called and wants its economic development playbook back. This is 2013... the 25,000 new residents are in market-rate apartments in neighborhoods near the Minneapolis campus, not in suburban geography-of-nowhere homes in Empire Township.

The impact would be spread far beyond the development site by workers unwilling to live there but instead would commute to the site.

During a presentation made at the U back in 2007, U officials indicated additional plans to develop much of the farmland in the vicinity of the St. Paul campus. Specifically, a townhome development for the fields to the north of Larpenteur Avenue and the east of Fairview Avenue. Also, they planned to build a hotel on the St. Paul campus, on what is now pasture land across the street from the Fairground parking lot. Visiting scholars and parents could stay there, and of course the U expected that it would be a popular place for fairgoers to book during the Fair. The bursting of the real estate bubble stayed all these plans. If the U is now ready to move forward with their Rosemount development, they may also be ready to move forward on the Falcon Heights area development plans, too.
