Amen, the way forward is youth, pitching and speed and the Twins are already showing signs of having all three. Patience, it only took two years of Bill Smith "going for it" and he gutted the next three years. Pohlands and Ryan are right to be looking forward. The Tigers seem unique in that the can sign FA and not implode, likely because the owner does not interfere in the baseball operation.

While it is true that Mauer is playing as well as any player earning $20+ million, is his performance is good enough to justify that exceptionally high salary? Would the Twins be better off with him or with other players paid with that $24 million? In other words, is it worth it to pay $24 million a year to have probably the best catcher in history?

Its a conundrum. If the Twins were not paying Mauer those $20 million paychecks, is there anyone out there who really believes they would have spent the money on quality players? I for one do not think so. I would rather have Mauer getting the money than the Pohlads keeping it.

Its the Twins way, or no way, get used to it, or stop following the Twins.

For all the people who complain about Joe Mauer's salary, I never hear anyone complain when a player like Ben Revere is paid about 10% (or less) of what he would be paid if he were eligible for free agency.

While it's easy to claim Joe is worth the contract so far this season, then by the same argument Joe was NOT worth the money in 2011 - the first year of his new contract. Anyone can take a specific timeframe to support their argument about a player being worth, or not worth, their contract for that particular timeframe. Point is, the season isn't even halfway done, so it's still too early to say definitively that Mauer is worth the $23 Mil he's being paid for the season.

sorry Jim, but just because a lot of other highly paid players are injured or playing poorly does not suddenly mean that Mauer is worth his contract.
