Fire lookout lodges offer history, views and uncommon shelter

Fire lookout towers in the backcountry provide not only soaring views of wild lands, but also cheap, unique shelter.

I was a kid, growing up near Coeur d'Alene. We'd run the logging roads in search of Huckleberries. I recall being in a tower like the one in the photo and a "smoke" plane flying by close enough that you could wave to the pilot. The guys lived at the tower and they had to keep chicken wire around their vehicles to prevent porcupines from eating the rubber parts under the hood.
