Ask Amy: Co-sleeping with baby carries risk

Dear Amy: My daughter had a baby four months ago. Her in-laws moved in with them at that time. The baby was put in a bassinet for the first month or so. After that the in-laws put the little baby to sleep in their bed at night. I have heard of horror stories of babies being smothered or falling out of bed.

Napping with baby on the couch & recliners are also death traps.

The mommy-wars continue - the first writer wants to tell someone how to care for their baby, and the second writer feels guilty because others are telling her how to live her life while raising children. Co-sleeping is not unsafe as long as the precautions mentioned by Amy are followed. You don't roll off your bed in the middle of the night; you don't roll over your child either. Let it go. And no one should make anyone feel guilty about their choice to stay home or to work while raising children. The women's movement has not achieved much if we haven't gotten the point where women can make their own choices, and others will respect that.

I am guilty of saying this to my best friend! I want to say it is not a Knock against stay at home mothers, but one self directed. I applaud those that can stay home and be happy. I am just not one of them.
