I had the privilege of meeting E.J. in the community while he was working to help young people. He's a really fine individual. Though he loved football and all that went with it, he was so humble even when he could have taken tons of credit and visibility for his philanthropy. He'll always be one of my favorite Vikings. We need more professional athletes like him; good guys who care as much about winning on the field as making life better off of the field. Thanks E.J. for caring and showing it (for real!).

Nice story. The more I look at the Vikings middle linebacker position the less I think it's a problem area. Bringing in a veteran free agent gives the Vikings no better option than the current options they have now and Erin Henderson will be the first option. The Penn State linebackers will also fit right into the mix as Hodges can take over the weak side spot and Mauti can be waiting in the wings as an understudy to Erin Henderson. Keep in mind that Erin Henderson slipped in the draft just like Mauti due to knee issues only Erin slipped even past the 7th round to be an undrafted free agent for the Vikings.

Thanks Chip, nice article. It's easy to see why E.J. was a leader with the Vikes. Happy to have him stay in Minnesota for the next chapter in his life. He seems to be doing all the right things personally (MBA) and community-wise. He's finding that giving back can be just as fulfilling as making tackles. You can never have too many quality people like E.J. in a community. I wish him continued success.

E.J. embodied the ultimate goal fo all athletes in that he balanced character, compassion and competitive spirit in the "team" way that all athletes should strive to do. Thanks for all you did for the Vikings and the community E.J. You are a class act and I will always remember your courage in overcoming adversity also.....God Bless !!!

Nice story Chip. It's refreshing to have a columnist writing for this paper that doesn't constantly tear people down.

We still miss you E.J. Glad you're doing well here post-football, though.

I wish he could have played at least one more season with the Vikes. I hope Erin takes his tenacious attitude on and becomes a great MLB for us. A very unique situation when one minute you are the man and your brother is about to be cut but makes the squad... then you are done and little brother is now up for your old job. Happy to see E.J. is a positive role model for children and his brother.

E.J. was a ferocious competitor. Erin is not E.J. I am not sure how Erin stayed on the field last year...he hasn't proven anything yet in the NFL.

E.J. was an animal the season where he had his first serious injury. I specifially remember seeing him dive OVER a Detroit blocker to make a tackle. He was poised to be one of the best LBs in the league...perhaps ever. Sad situation, how it ultimately played out.
