The star middle linebacker went out like Butkus and Singletary did.

Souhan is very effusive in his praise of Urlacher, but he is dead wrong on one key point. He states that Urlacher did not "seek one last paycheck in a foreign uniform". I'm a Viking fan in exile in Chicago, and I listened to Urlacher being interviewed on a local radio station earlier today, and he specifically said that his agent "had contacted every team in the NFL." The Bears clearly saw his diminished skills - his lack of lateral movement and inability to cover down the middle any more, and that's why they offered him only a $2MM contract for this year with only $1MM guaranteed. They are also well aware of his bad attitude in the locker room - and his famous quote last year that he did not care what the fans think. And - his off-field exploits that are well chronicled in Chicago would make Fred Smoot blush (really!). No surprise there was no market for him in the league. Yes, Urlacher was a tremendous player for many years - but please Mr. Souhan, leave the sainthood business to the Vatican, k?

Ironic in some respects in that Alan Page did go to Chicago to finish out his career and at the time, he was still a decent player but not even close to his ability in the good old days. Maybe it is a good thing that Urlacher retires, but we are still missing the big picture here. Who is going to be the vikes middle linebacker? Nobody on the current roster has shown that they can do it well......

I like Souhans writing style don't get me wrong, but taking shots at Favre and Salisbury when the current QB is far worse than they could ever be. Take shots at Ponder. He's the worst starting QB in the league not named Sanchez.

Only the sportswriters pay tribute to pre-Hall of Fame players; coaches aren't paid for that. When defensive coaches see opponents exploiting a defensive liability, they tell that to the front office, which was the case in Urlacher, as it was with Alan Page--and that is one of the few things I like about the NFL.

The guy who preceded Butkus, Bill George, was no slouch either.

glenlivet May. 24, 13 8:04 AM "When defensive coaches see opponents exploiting a defensive liability, they tell that to the front office, which was the case in Urlacher, as it was with Alan Page..." Page averaged the same number of sacks per game with the Bears (40 sacks in 58 games, 0.69 average) as he did with the Vikings (108-1/2 sacks in 160 games, 0.68 average). So no, Page was NOT a defensive liability when he left Minnesota.

In his 13 years with the Bears, they won a TOTAL OF 3 PLAYOFF GAMES and had six winning season. Certainly not all his fault, but not close to the results obtained by either Butkus or Singletary. It is a team game, and a lot of players put up great personal stats with losers. Glad the Vikes passed on him and that he whiffed with all the others also.

callsaul - what a refreshingly witty, spot-on post. Ya made my day with that one, and you are so 'right' on point - Ponder the worst starting quarterback in the NFL sans Sanchez. On to Urlacher, he was a better MLB than anyone this team has had in the last 30 years - easily. Quiet but fiery, totally professional and a super talent from a nothing school with far superior football IQ. The Vikings, as a team, have a very low football IQ - they play *stupid* compared to other teams, making a guy like Urlacher a pleasure to watch. Complete respect for this guy, this team could use 53 men like that.
