"Some see potential to monitor river levels, wildfires, storm damage and more with domestic drones."

"and more" being the key words in this sub-headline.

skylab2 you are absolutely correct. I worked with drones while deployed in the war on terror. Folks, you don't want these here. The NDAA was just recently signed into law, giving the military authorization to arrest Americans-just saying.

As long as you do not publicly express any opposition to the current administration, you have nothing to fear.

Does anybody really believe that our government won't be abusing its power and using these things to "monitor" us in the name of "safety"?

You can never have enough drone facilities. I would recommend that every city have one. I can understand that the feds need them to keep all the Canadians entering the country under surveillance. Every other government agency needs them to watch us in case we jay-walk.

Under the Bush administration all border states were given drones for "security." With a little Google Fu one can find stories of these drones being used to track U.S. citizens for a variety of reasons, at times unrelated to homeland "security." One I recall is a drug investigation in CA. It's unfortunate that side of the equation was not mentioned in the article.
