Schafer: Market changes doomed small stocks

The simplest way to understand why this Star Tribune 100 is likely the last that will have 100 publicly held companies on it may be to consider the success of a TV pitchman known as the E-Trade baby.

I don't miss paying 300.00 commission to buy a 100 shares of stock. I also don't miss being in mutual funds holding stocks I wouldn't own. Now the retail investor has to deal with HFT that reads the news and buy and sells stock in a fraction of second. Even so, the retail investor is better off if they know how to value companies.
