Q: I received nine e-mails with photos from a relative in Puerto Rico. When I opened the first one, it suddenly disappeared from view. I thought that I had inadvertently deleted it in some way and checked in the “trash” file, but it wasn’t there. So I went back to the “inbox” to open the second e-mail, and to my surprise, none of the eight remaining e-mails were there. However, all other e-mails I had received were still there, and my computer is otherwise working perfectly. What happened?

When you install software like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware or other decent products like Ccleaner, use them as soon as you get your new PC or right after you do a reinstall. The product will do a better job of getting rid of what you don't want and will actually learn not to mess with things it should not. Running anti-virus and products that get rid of temp files and caches every week will keep your PC lean and mean.

If people use decent web browsers and never install software on their computer through their browser (or download and install other untrusted software), the chances of getting a virus or Internet Explorer specific spyware is very low. I have been using the internet since 1995 and never once have I had any problems. Also, keeping your computer updated with security patches as soon as they are released is key. I would strongly recommend to everyone that they not use Internet Explorer due to its history of being exploited and its integration with the operating system. The following web browsers are all excellent and all are free, terrific alternatives to Internet Explorer: Opera, Firefox, Apple Safari, Google Chrome. Also, Consumer Reports recently released a list of recommended free antivirus and anti spyware programs: Avast, Avira, AVG, Microsoft Security Essentials.
