Sid Hartman: Nathan continues to deliver at the end

The closer has more saves in 2008 than he did at this point a year ago, even with a starting rotation as inexperienced as the Twins' this season.

Will be our record if we don't fill the holes we have at shortstop and third base. The production there has been mediocre at best; Kubel has been vanilla average and Mauer continues to have the slugging percentage lower than Alexi Casilla. Make a move that works this time Bill Smith!

Looks like they're going to need to buy a bigger curtain to cover all those empty seats in the upper decks...

Considering the fact that most experts were saying before the season began that thr Twins would be one of the worst teams in baseball, 81-81 would be acceptable. One local sportswriter even opined that the Twins would be out of contention by the end of May.

Mauer's OPS is 100 points higher than Casilla's, his SA is higher, and opposing pitchers don't work Casilla the way they do Mauer, preferring to walk him and face Morneau -- not a comfortable alternative, but they seem to prefer gambling on the DP rather than letting Mauer get his hacks. Maybe what the Twins need is more knowledgeable fans.

6'5 230 lbs, great athlete... another weak grounder to the shortstop for a double play... another lazy fly ball to leftfield. How hard is it for him to sacrifice 10-20 points on his batting average and put a bit more into his hits? Don Mattingly was way more important than Wade Boggs, so was Kirby Puckett for that matter. Hitting .330 is nice, but if you are batting 3rd in the lineup you damn well better drive in runs. Mauer is a leadoff hitter, or a number 2 hitter. He doesn't have the power to be a number 3 hitter. How many double plays does he hit to short? How many lazy fly balls to the opposite field? Quit being scared, and pull the ball! He was the number 1 pick overall, and the 3rd hitter in the line up he needs to produce more.

Isn't this the third article you have written in basically the last month that starts out talking about what a great move it was to sign Nathan? Anyone who follows baseball understands he is a premiere player; really there is no need to point out how stellar it was for the Twins to retain him after saving $35+ million a year in sending Hunter and Santana on to greener pastures.

fans are always going to be experts. the only ones who are bothersome are the ones who don't actually watch, just criticize. there is now way you could watch this team and not love the way they play. just amazing to see this budding world championship team develop.
