WASHINGTON – With the simplest of sentences, NBA veteran Jason Collins, who played in 2008-09 with the Minnesota Timberwolves, set aside years of worry and silence to become the first active player in one of the four major U.S. professional sports leagues to come out as gay.

Oh gawd, get back in the closet. This country is going to Heck in a hand basket I tell ya.

Oh, brother, if this country is going to hell in a handbasket it certainly isn't because there is a gay man coming out in the NBA, NFL, NHL or MLB for Pete's sake. There are far bigger issues causing that. And I really wish ignorant commenters would go in the closet and never peek their heads out again.

He's gay? Who cares?

I know a lot of people were saying things yesterday like, "I don't care who he sleeps with, he just doesn't need to be announcing it to everyone", etc etc. Here's the thing. He has had to hide who he is for his entire life. That would take a toll on a human. He had to watch who he went to dinner with, who he left the arena with, etc. Put yourself in his shoes and flip the situation. You're straight, but society tells you that you are less of a person for that. Now you have to hide everything about yourself so that no one figures it out. THAT'S why this is such a big deal. Now people can start to be who they are and stop hiding it. They're not flaunting it, they're just done hiding it.

Excuse the cynicism, but I think the fact that he's a journeyman player and a free agent may have something to do with his decision to make the big announcement about his sexual preference. Suddenly, a player who no one but diehard fans were aware of is the one everyone is talking about. Keep on eye on his contract negotiations and watch how many teams will be interested in this guy. He's in for a very big payday.

Being gay/lesbian does not make one special. It just makes them as normal and/or abnormal as everyone else. It would be nice if the constant need for announcements ceased.

This is such a non-story in today's age. I laugh at the media praising his "courage." Greg Louganis was couragous coming out in the 1980s at the peak of his diving career. Branch Rickey and Jackie Robinson were couragous. As long as Jason Collins can put the ball in the basket...I don't care about his personal life as long as he is not breaking the law.
