Rick Spielman said character concerns and off-the-field issues were not the reasons Florida defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd and Florida State cornerback Xavier Rhodes fell to Minnesota

What a great draft day for Spielman, Studwell and the entire Vikings draft day staff. I'm not going to criticize the Vikes for giving away too much for Patterson. Its way too early for that anyways. But the Vikings still need to fill a void at LB/MLB. I'm not sure a 4th round pick will be ready to step right in and contribute. But I'm sure the Vikings have an idea of what they're going to do. We also need to add depth at OL. I'll give the Vikings an "A" grade for DAY 1. I'll also add that I redally like ther new uniforms. I like the purple is darker, and that there's more of it. I also like the sleeves and the design of the numbers. A very nice look for what should be a very good Minnesota Vikings team.

I like the whole draft by Rick. I would have done the same, BUT, there IS a concern with Rhodes - he does NOT play zone, and in college, has shown he is VERY poor in a zone defensive scheme - and doesn't like it. We now have to pray he learns and becomes skilled in the zone scheme since that's all there is in the NFL week after week. Rhodes is a man corner who does NOT blitz thus far and that's it - all of the analysts and scouts made this clear and said it was a major concern. Unless Gerhardt is traded so we draft a MLB, we have a BIG problem there and Audie Cole is nowhere near able to fill that position. MLB is THE captain of the defense - the heart and soul of it. This edges out corner in importance.

Xavier Cugat will start the season opener, but Omar Shariff will be slotted in later in the season. Don't expect much from Cordell Stewart (Slash?) this season because of his Wonderlic, but he sure looks good on tape!

I hope Winfield returns Spielman's call someday for a ceremonial contact signing/retirement!

Agreed. The Big Pat move was the Vikes realizing how bad they screwed up the Winfield move.

kfanvike Apr. 26, 13 12:45 PM... "there IS a concern with Rhodes - he does NOT play zone, and in college, has shown he is VERY poor in a zone defensive scheme - and doesn't like it." I'd like to know where you're getting your information from. None of the reports I've read say that Rhodes is "poor" in zone defense or that he "doesn't like it," and at least a few have said he's good at it. More importantly, they all speak glowingly of his ability to force receivers out of their routes, which is precisely what CBs need to do in the Vikings' defense.

The Pat Williams move is nice, but I don't think he ever signed with another team after his contract with the Vikings ran out, so didn't he already retire as a Viking (albeit not under the circumstances he would have preferred)?

tdietscheApr. 27, 13 2:24 AM

@gadfly, no he didn't retire, he just didn't get re-signed, and didn't catch on with any other team. So it wasn't his decision, it was the decision of the teams that didn't want to sign him up again. Now he can officially retire on his own. That's why it is different.
