Twin Cities road crews’ refrain: plow, patch, repeat

Pothole fighters in the Twin Cities say they’ve been busy plowing instead of patching.

Instead of patching our roads for 50 years, how about setting aside money that is supposed to be set aside, for complete road tear up and new pavement. The streets around here are in horrible condition, and have been for years, and all we get is the same potholes that keep getting bigger and bigger every year, filled. Something's wrong with this picture!

our street in N.Mpls is destroyed. Cracks in the pavement everywhere, and a huge pothole that buses run over every day. The whole street needs to be replaced.

How about using a product that actually will stand the test of time and weather like "Asphalt-Rubber". The product uses recycled tires helps the environment and give the product fexibility in extreme temperature changes. Yeah its a little more expensive upfront because of its durability, but you don't get this constant need for repair and dishing out $$$. Maybe a call for an AUDIT of of MNDoT financial distribution and how they are wasting these funds is in order? The extra dollar you spend now will save you hundreds/thousands later when using a proven product instead of patch jobs!

re: " How about using a product that actually will stand the test of time and weather like "Asphalt-Rubber" -- Asphalt rubber compounds are used right now primarily in fair-weather states, with one of the primary goals being pavement noise reduction. They have not yet been proven in Minnesota-type weather, but MnDOT’s research arm has been experimenting with asphalt rubber compounds at their lab in Maplewood and at the MnRoad facility along I-94. Remember that much of the damage from weather comes through to the surface from the base and sublayers of the pavement, where freeze-thaw cycles really do their dirty work. A rubberized topcoat won’t do much for that, and the rubberized products don’t work well as base layers of pavement. Hope for the future maybe, but nothing out there we can rely on in Minnesota just yet.

I don't know that I have an answer for this but this is what I saw this morning in Coon Rapids. Pot hole workers were filling holes with the black patch material, all which will probably be washed away tonight with the rain/slush mixture. Seems like a waste of money. I have been under the assumption this material works better when it is hot out, and can set. Maybe I am wrong?

If the contractor that laid the parkway in the 70's did not comply with the specifications then it should be held liable for repairing the road - and be prosecuted for fraud.

re: " I have been under the assumption this material works better when it is hot out" -- Right now repair crews are stuck with "cold patch" mixes, which are a temporary fix at best. The hot mix you're thinking of isn't available until the commercial asphalt plants open when the weather allows for regular paving to be done. The small amounts needed for pothole patching are not enough to justify opening the plants, operators lose money at those small volumes. Plus it won't properly set up when cold and wet, so the result is usually the same.
