12 degress F. for the low last night. Snow pack is still with us in West Cedntral Mn. and it is not looking good for the opener. The MN/SD Early Border Fishing Opener was iced in for the first time I can remember. We need a major warm up here in Minnesota! No more blizzards!

Fish the rivers. Maybe a late iceout will give Mille Lacs a needed breather.

Load up on tons of pre-spawn walleyes! Yum!

Love the photo of the Upper Red Lake. Are there any walleyes left in that lake or did the poachers get them all again?

It's not any different than anyone else who tries to make a living off of mother nature. It's a gamble and out of your control. So there's no reason to cry about it when you 'might' be on the losing end once and a while. That's fishing.

What will it mean? Hopefully thousands of crappies, sunfish, walleyes and northerns will be able to spawn before their egg laiden bodies are captured and eaten by so called "sportsmen".

mnwaterfowler13Apr. 23, 1310:29 AM

The amount of eggs in a water body is never an issue as shown on some lakes where you can get masses of walleye eggs washing up on shore. This is further reinforced by the fact that a closed fishing season makes zero biological sense, check the academic, peer reviewed literature, its all there. Having a fishing opener is done in a purely economical sense.

langstonApr. 23, 1311:48 AM

There is NO sound reason for even having a closed season or an 'Opening Day.' It's based on emotion, culture and a feel-good falsehood.

17* this morning in Bemidji. I reckon we're still makin ice up here.

voner26Apr. 26, 13 9:41 AM

Still 30" of ice up "North" as some say. We need lots of rain and wind to clean it up. If the lake is mostly covered with ice some guys will be using two lines. One through the ice on one side of the boat and one in open water on the other side.
