Late spring forces postponement of Minnetonka crappie contest

One of Minnesota’s first open-water fishing contests of the season has been washed out — because of no open water.

Too ban about the pheasants...not a pleasant way to go. As far as the crappies? Few hundred more spawning fish get to live another year....not so bad.

Male crappie vigorously defend their nests from egg predators or anything they perceive might be an egg eater. If an intruder gets close, the defending male chases it, nipping until it leaves the area. -- So if you love crappies you should leave them alone until they are done spawning and all done protecting their nests.

And you wonder why the crappie fishing on Tonka has gone down hill. Too many people fishing for them year-round with absolutely no break for the fish!
