It’s been a whirlwind past couple of weeks for Richard Pitino. As he gets acclimated to his new job as the Gophers men’s basketball coach, he chatted with the Star Tribune’s Michael Rand on Monday on a number of subjects:

I like what this young coach has to say. I am excited to see how he does on the recruiting trail. Lots of experts are saying that he is late to the table in recruiting Jones, Vaughn and Reid and that he should concentrate on the next recruiting class...I don't know. I think that he still has a good chance with all 3. Until those guys signed on the dotted line, it's not official.

Rich is saying all the right things. Good luck, Rich. I like what expectations both you and Norwood are setting for the BB program at the U. You can only achieve what you shoot for.

Wish I could coach a boys game and make millions. Too bad universities have lost sight of the bigger picture of teaching.

What? Re-headline a story, remove all the comments, and repost it 12 hours later and think the readers are idiots?

Love his answer about the "practice facility." That was always the TV networks media's excuse for Tubby. Is the practice facility why Justin Cobbs or Iverson left the program, or why the Gopher's couldn't run an in-bounds play? Pitino is at least starting off with no excuses - the kids will come because of the program, and him and his coaching staff. Great to see a guy step up and take personal responsibility.

I certainly wish the young man well and willing to take the position as is without setting up excuses in advance to cover him in case he fails, i.e practice faciity or a need to get an average team off of the schedule as the football coach demonstrating how insecure he felt about being able to recruit players who could play D-I football. No excuses or stated need to schedule several East Overshoe Techs in order to get a win or two. I like that!

A practice facility is nice, but like coach Pitino said kids aren't going to come here because of a practice facility. Tubby lost here because he was a bad recruiter, had bad assistants and was a terrible in game coach. He just had to blame everything and everyone else when he lost a game. There were many games here when his decisions in game were the sole cause of a loss.

I guarantee you facilities make a difference with recruits. If it's close do you think they are going to the place without 24/7 access to playing basketball as well as a hot tub/whirlpool etc? The arena itself is where they play the games. If it's packed it's a great atmosphere and the players go to their plush facility afterwards.

Get all three of the big in-state recruits and it will be our version of the Fab Five.
