Will the world ever be ready to challenge Russian statements about a Polish tragedy?

I'm glad this was put in the "opinion" section...because it certainly doesn't rise to the level of a decently written piece examining the issue.

Don't fly important people around on a tired old Russian aircraft. Modern aircraft have forward looking radar and hardly even need a ground based nav-aid to find a runway in zero vis. Pilots in this wreck under pressure... reason for the trip was a big deal at the time.

100 foreign non-russian experts got together and without viewing any physical evidence concluded the russians were involved in the crash.

Architects and Engineers for 9-11 truth (with their compiled Doctors degrees) have shown time and time again that 9-11 did not happen the way that our government would lead us to believe. Both this case and 9-11 need to be reexamined.

So, we can expect the Star tribune to begin publishing opinion pieces from 9/11 conspiracy buffs, Wellstone crash conspiracy buffs and maybe some Bermuda Triangle conspiracy buffs too?

This tragic crash is very well documented and there is no mystery at all as to what happened----unless one decides that the supposed assassins created the dense fog at the airport that day, faked all of the CVR and FDR data, and placed fake wreckage and fake destroyed trees off the end of the runway in Smolensk.

The fact that Michele Bachmann supports these irresponsible conspiracy theorists is hardly a ringing endorsement of their sad delusion.

mnbusdr, get real. The emergency room nurses and Doctors said the wound in back of the head was an exit wound and the wound in the throat was an entry wound and it was discovered that the weight of the bullet particles found in Conally added to the weight of the "magic bullet" is greater than the weight of a like bullet, and, there were more bullet holes discovered at the site than Sirhan's gun could fire, yet, the conclusion is still the single bullet theory and a single shooter in both killings. Also, a judge ruled that the MLK Jr. shooter's rifle shot analysis shows the bullet hitting King could not have come from the MLK Jr. shooter's rifle found at the site. You are naive to think that official politicians' conclusions are accurate in the U.S. and elsewhere.

I will agree with all critics of the above article if they produce the correct height at which the "panzer birch" was broken. As you might know, it was measured by the official investigators for the first time at the end of 2012 - more than two years after the accident. Never mind, that it constitutes the pivot of the official narration, there are three different official results of the measurement. Good luck trying to convince anybody that the official investigation was based on any physical evidence. The head of the Polish official commission explicitly denounced the need for any physical evidence in a public statement.

I may add that both the Russian and Polish investigators act in violation of the law. Polish is straight illegal. They act on the basis of mr. Putin's internal decree, which recommends basing the procedures on the Washington Agreement that regulates exclusively the civil aviation. That flight was not civil however and should have been investigated according to a bilateral agreement from 1993. Moreover, ICAO stated that it had no legal basis to intervene in this (non-civil) case.

The pilot's guilt was announced 15 minutes after the first reports of the crash, together with the information, that 3 persons survived. That was later corrected to "vsye pogibli" - all dead. The encrypted data from the american flight recorder that had to be sent to Universal Avionics Corp. for decrypting - a reliable source - shows 2 peaks of vertical acceleration that surpass in magnitude any possible acceleration produced by the airplane, at the height of ca. 30 metres above the ground. Those coincide with two areas of airplane fragments found on the ground, before the place of supposed collision with the birch tree (data from the Russian report).

It wouldn't be surprising if the arrogant Russian response was simply another example of Putinesque small mindedness. It wouldn't be surprising if the Russians were being protective of their air traffic controllers. It wouldn't even be surprising if there was something more sinister going on. We should be supportive of the Pole's effort to get a satisfactory and open investigation of the crash.
