Only 12% of all guns are sold without a background check. Senate should be working on a bill that helps enforce existing laws.

"Only 12% of all guns are sold without a background check" -- guns or gun sales? Sounds like another lame, convoluted NRA attempt at misdirection.

I don't understand this obsession about records. The GOP does not any records kept but it is OK to have records on everything else that we do/buy. There are records of our phone calls, drugstore, auto, boats, etc, etc. What are they afraid of if they are obeying the laws??

Point 1: "Law enforcement officials say records are invaluable for tracking guns used in crimes. Currently, gun dealers keep sales records for 20 years. The government is forbidden from doing so."-------------------- I never understood why law-abiding citizens would support a law that is INTENTIONALLY designed to hinder investigations of crimes.

"What are they afraid of if they are obeying the laws??" .................. It's called presumption of innocence. It's up to the legal system to prove guilt, not the other way around. To know that there are people out there who actually believe that the opposite should be true is beyond scary.

The government does not need my health records or records of products I buy.

"The GOP does not any records kept but it is OK to have records on everything else that we do/buy." --- Can you give us some examples? Doubtful. Records are kept on products that are taxed or have fees associated with them on an ongoing basis. Please start a list.

barbjens - Are you OK with the government listening in on your phone calls or searching your house without a warrant? If you have nothing to hide and aren't breaking any laws what are you afraid of?

"Only 12% of all guns are sold without a background check. Senate should be working on a bill that helps enforce existing laws."...................The only research done on this indicates that over 40% of all gun sales are done without background checks: gun shows, private sales, and purchasing guns/ammo on the internet are all able to transpire without background checks. I"m guessing that your 12% figure was generated by the NRA, because it completely falls apart with the research that has been done.

"The only research done on this indicates that over 40% of all gun sales are done without background checks"

Nothing like using data that is over 20 years old to try and support your argument.
