Pandemics that changed civilization have occurred twice since the time of Christ. The Plague of Justinian in the 6th Century and the Black Death of the 14th Century. It was common to see entire villages wiped out. Major cities had as much as 60% of the population gone. Rural areas 25% dead. Each time all of this happened in just a couple of years. Can it happen again? Who knows? But this version of this Bird Flu seems to have something over a 25% fatality rate, and that's with good quality medical care.
