What's the point? Whatever the dems get out of this will be so incredibly watered down that to call it even a symbolic victory will be a stretch. But if "victory" is still a valid description, then it would be more accurately a pyrrhic one. When push comes to shove, how many Democrats are going to be willing to put their own careers in jeopardy with their constituents by voting yes on anything substantive on this issue? And even more to the point, how much is Obama willing to risk by pushing an issue that could very well cost him much of his congressional support following the 2014 elections, and thus putting even more of his political agenda in danger? The will of the American people has been made clear, and this is nowhere more apparent than in the wavering Dems.
They don't have enough democrats who support the measure to pass it. Fortunately, there are still some democrats with common sense that understand no new law is going to change anything. There are also enough democrats who still listen to their constituents and know this is not acceptable to them.
Americans, want no further infringement on our constitutional rights and demand that current laws be enforced. Calling for "universal background
checks" ignores the facts. How can a background check be "universal" when it depends on voluntary compliance between individuals? I doubt sales between
criminals in the back alley in the dark of night would include a background check, just like happens now. Meaningless feel good posturing, nothing more.
There are laws on the books already that require background checks for sales by licensed dealers. Anything beyond that is unenforceable. Adding more
restrictions on top of the thousands already on the books does little. Lack of enforcement is the problem.
14 democrat senators up for re-election in red states will transform these states to blue states, and for Obama! The remaining red states will turn blue in 2014, because they realize nobody needs an AR15 for duck hunting!
