University of Minnesota's bloat must end

Great letter Arne. Getting university prima-donnas to reduce their pay and benefits will happen when pigs fly. How on earth were these salaries and bloated benefits allowed to happen? Cronyism perhaps. Clean house legislature!

Arnie is correct. There are thousands of places to lean out the organization and re-focus on the core mission of the university. It is not complicated.

Excellent article Arne! The U needs to be reformed top to bottom prior to the State providing additional funding. Quality and affordable education should be their priority which will require tough decisions, big cuts/consolidation/partnerships and leadership by Mr Kaler and the Regents. They need to step up and show leadership as opposed to whining for more money.

Lately I haven't been in too much agreement with Carlson but he is spot on here. Good luck getting Dayton to follow along. His answer, as was shown in an earlier article, is to throw even more taxpayer money at schools and students.

So then... the university president, the lead attorney for the university, the university president’s chief of staff, the university lobbyist, 81 administrators and a fundraiser/part-time teacher (and, I suspect, several coaches) earn more than any comparable elected or appointed government official at the federal and state level. What's the solution? Is there a law which prohibits "excessive compensation" at the U? Is compensation at the U excessive in comparison to CEO compensation? Can the U lure the "best and brightest" administrators away from the private sector without attempting to match private sector compensation excesses?

The U is indeed full of waste at the upper layers. Arne won't like this, but I think a great place to start is Athletics. Look at the recent examples of exorbitant buyouts of coaches! So what if the Gophers don't win national titles in sports? The U is supposed to prepare young Minnesotans to be productive members of society, not to train professional athletes. Then there are the double-dipping professors from GA. Kaler deserved a year or so to learn about the U. Now, it's time for him to act.

Every college or university I ever attended or taught at has seen a huge increase in the number of administrators and their salaries. I first noticed it in the early 1980s, when I learned that a small local college had five administrators who made 50% more than ANY professor, including some who were well known local experts in their fields. The situation has only gotten worse since then.

But administrative bloat and egotism are not limited to academia. In every industry I know of, executives and managers think they're more important than the people who do the actual work of the company or organization, and they demand outrageous sums of money. There's a whole class of people in this country who need to be taken down a peg, not because I "hate success" but because they're mostly pretty ordinary people who don't work all that hard, don't make such great decisions, and keep dumping on the people who DO do the work.

Oh, no. We were told that the University has to pay top dollar to get the best educators-evern if they don't show up to work.

mandansmom; They need to get rid of Title IX and then eliminate certain sports. Football (not including the sale of beer), hockey, basketball and maybe some others are profitable for the school.
