Remember when liberals were criticingb the GOP for focusing on social issues rather than the economy? Well???? Where on the complaints now?

You want equal rights? Civil unions will grant them. We will now find out that this really isn't about rights but about a word. A word that has religious meaning that liberals want to destroy. Maybe they think that granting the use to same sex couples will legitimize and normalize their behavior. It will not.

So, where is the tolerance from the self-proclaimed tolerant progressives? Why must you disrespect my religion and beliefs? You were angered by a minister in Florida who threatened to burn a religious book. You called that insensitive and demanded the book be respected. But, when it comes to my religion you have no tolerance whatsoever.

This would accomplish nothing, and should not be considered a reasonable alternative.

A reasonable compromise that allows all the civil rights without intruding onto church doctrine. If you want to marry, you just find a religion that supports your choice.

We've tried "separate but equal" before in America. It didn't work. Marriage equality IS coming. Lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way.

tupelohoney: Whatever I say won't quash your anger, but I ask you to consider that my wife and I are Christians raising our kids in the faith that they will "do onto others as they would have them do unto them." As a lesbian couple, we recognize we are not welcome in certain churches, and teach our kids that there are people who will not accept our familiy but we must love and forgive them. Our church fully recognizes our family and engages us--I am sorry yours does not. Words have meanings, and "wife" and "spouse" designate a committment beyond "civil union." Our kids are healthy, smart and tolerant of folks who don't accept us. We respect your beliefs, but don't expect us to think we're hellbound in a handbasket. We live our lives as Christians and not judging others. I think that's fair, don't you?

Here's an idea: let's have the state only recognize civil unions for all, straight and gays. Marriage will be performed at churches, mosques or temples but would have no legal standing. Not as attractive of an idea, eh? 13 years ago I MARRIED my partner of 26 years in Canada. I did not do this at a church (I am atheist) but at Toronto's City Hall. I did not "civil unionized" him, I married him.

tupelohoney, Did your religion own the word "marriage"? Unless allowing gay/lesbian citizens to get married somehow will force you to marry another person of the same gender as yours, this is really none of your business.

All marriages are civil unions. The argument is so pointless. Everyone gets distracted by the idea that the religious cleric has been granted BY THE STATE a civil role; he gets to sign your marriage license as a designated representative of the state. That license is then filed, with the state and your civil union is thusly recognized. Whether your license is signed and witnessed by a cleric or a judge or a justice of the peace, you have entered a Civil Union. What you did at the mosque/temple/church is not relevant to your civil union. That is private, between you and your version of God (or not) and your family and friends. The state doesn't care, why do we?
