Embrace the frustration, Gophers fans. We’ve entered the complicated stage of negotiating, with much up in the air.

While I can respect Teague and Ellis for keeping tight-lipped about the process, there's also a price to pay for that approach. The longer it lasts and the more candidates that come and go, the more the speculation increases. When an alum with the kind of resume Flip Saunders has, turns them down, you can't blame fans for becoming skeptical.

I was in the "fire Tubby" camp (still am), but I'm disappointed in that I thought there was SOMETHING in place at the time of the firing. I guess it's a case of "be careful what you wish for, you may get it".

Thank you, Amelia, for debunking the "I can't believe we didn't have a slam-dunk candidate waiting" myth; coaches are a pretty tight-knit group and won't go behind a coach's back to apply for his job. Furthermore, I wouldn't say there were "offers" made to Smart, Hoiberg and Stevens; it was just gauging interest. So what that four coaches are out of the running; does anyone really believe those were the only four coaches in America that would do right by the Gophers? I'm pulling for Marshall first, and Williams second. And if we don't hear about Williams by Tuesday or Wednesday, I think Teague's going for Marshall.

Patience is one thing...but, Tom Izzo and other big name coaches aren't going to be patient, stop recruiting Minnesota's "Big Three" Tyus Jones, Rashad Vaughn and Reid Travis. and wait for the Minnesota to hire a new head coach. Tick, tick, tick. Time keeps on slipping, slipping, slipping...into the Gophers' future.

I understand that folks are anxious, but the level of panic over the lack of a hire after just one week has become ridiculous. I can only hope that Teague and Ellis aren't hyperventilating into a paper bag like some Gophers fans are doing already. The notion that the next coach is supposed to be lined up, waiting for Tubby's firing, is just silly. Teague and Ellis said they had no timetable. Why? Because they know how this works. They reach out to coaches on their list, some of whom use them for richer extensions, some of whom are courting multiple opportunities, and some of whom are interested. Other candidates are still coaching, or have been until recently. It's a process, and the result is more important than the timing. Fans' anxiety is compounded by the misperception that the UM job is some kind of great opportunity. Tubby Smith was here for six years and still nobody stepped up on the practice facility he asked for in his very first press conference. Now the price for lack of investment and fundraising in the program is being paid, and people want to lay it on Teague? Please. Most of the desireable young coaches Gophers fans want already have it better where they are. The common thread is, they were offered their current jobs when they were unknown assitants. Expect the same for the Gophers.

Try McHale.... Alum of U of M and great guy and coach. Flip was never interested in coming here.. Maybe the fired coach of UCLA might want the job... he is a great coach

Time waits for no one..."...time keeps on ticking...into the future...? Do you really think: "...time, time, time is on our side?" I suppose there will be a few more coaches fired. Maybe our new norwood will eventually have to start going after coaches who have been relieved of their duties elsewhere. You know that guy for UCLA had a pretty good resume. If ONLY he would have been on the villa 7 client list. You know: if Tubby would only sign up for that villa 7 thing, maybe our new norwood and his trusty side-kick ellis might revisit his profile! Maybe he would return the buy-out money if our new norwood would extend him a couple extra years! But, you are correct, Amelia. Some of those norwood/ellis disciples...fans, et al things are getting really grumpy, aggressive and appear to be coming undone by the fact that our new norwood and his ellis buddy are taking some heat for this mess. Well, my vote would be for prexy k and our new norwood to revisit Flip and get him hired. Otherwise, I'm not so sure if the ad will be a very effective fund-raiser for the U. And, the U really needs ALL the funds it can get! ; 0 )

jfromuk, Apparently you have not been watching the practices and games. Smith had control of most of the decisions he made here that led to his poor Big Ten record. The injury and lack of school work by Nolan was not his doing and Smith has to be given some slack for those years. However, his preference to play two forwards instead of a true center and forward up front during his six years was Smith's doing. Changing players shooting mechanics, which usually ends in disaster, during his six years was Smith's doing. Not playing his freshmen this year was Smith's doing and protecting major contributors with fouls on the bench for long periods was Smith's doing. After having three players projected to go in this years NBA draft after the win against Memphis, Smith's subsequent errors ended with the team in 9th place for the third year in a row and the possibility that no Gopher players will be drafted into the NBA draft this year. The purpose of a college Coach is to win and develop players. His record is clearly lacking and Smith was let go at great cost.

" And, the U really needs ALL the funds it can get!"... The U sports now gets around $29 million or so a year from the Big Ten. Most other schools in other conferences are lucky to get $10 million. Big Ten wants its product to be the best, top to bottom, to keep that loose change coming... Smith was not providing product of a quality the Big Ten required - do not for one second believe that the removal of Smith was not supported by, or even hinted at by the Big Ten.
