Souhan: Will up-and-coming Twins be worth wait?

Current prospects, compared to the 2001 group, have talent. But will they be as driven as the group of young players who drove the last Minnesota resurgence a dozen years ago?

mental toughness is exactly the key...something the 2001Twins had and then added the chip of contraction on top of it...they over achieve in the best way. That group lives on in Twins folk lore for sure.

"The recent failures of the farm system have led to 195 losses in the past two seasons" I would take issue with that statement. Two years ago the farm system was horrible. We were promoting guys who were having terrible seasons in the minors just because we needed bodies. That was the year the minors failed us but generaly the minors shouldn't be providing the ENTIRE rotation, first baseman, 3rd baseman, centerfielder and catcher. Last year we had Diamond, and Revere step up and for a while Plouffe. That should be about what you should expect from the minors in any one given year. What failed us the last two years was Mauer one year and Morneau the other, Slowey, Baker, Liriano, Blackburn, Pavano, Nathan, Capps, Valencia, Casilla. All were guys who had success in the majors in prior years that became almost worthless in their prime years. Give the minors some blame but the bulk of it goes to guys who produced well and contributed to a few division titles and then dropped off production almost completely to a halt.

Jim you know what would really be impressive?!? if the New Twins win more than one playoff series in a decade! it would also be impressive if the New Twins avoid a 12 game post season losing steak (longest in mlb history...and counting)! it would also be really impressive if we had some Professional sports journalists in this town.

The key is starting pitching. I should just stop there, but I won't. Position players are great, but look at the SF Giants. Only a few of their position players are remarkable on paper. It's the starting rotation, a few stars in the field, and then a matter of fitting other pieces together. Without the starting pitching, none of the rest matters. The Twins need 3 or 4 of the top starting prospects to pan out over the next 2-3 years or a .500 finish is the maximum upside to be expected.

None of this new Twins vs. old Twins will matter if Ron Gardenhire is still the manager. One ALDS title and 10 straight playoff losses over the last 12 seasons does not provide me much hope, now or within 3 years if Gardy is still the manager.

Given they kept Gardenhire and a weak pitching staff, the 2013 Twins will be lucky to win 80 games.

80 games? try 65

avalancheguyMar. 31, 13 5:19 PM

Vegas has the Twins winning 66.
