Chart: Potential replacements for Tubby Smith

• Shaka Smart: The Virginia Commonwealth coach is sought after by pretty much every major school with a vacancy, including UCLA. He turned down Illinois a year ago. So why would he come here? Well, Gophers AD Norwood Teague hired him at VCU, and the two remain close. The relationship at least gets Minnesota a foot in the door.

Fred Hoiberg wouldn't leave Iowa St. to coach the Gophers. The only way he would leave would be to coach the Wolves or another NBA team. There are many NBA executives who think he is NBA coaching material.

Hoiberg??? Give me a break. Fred would never leave ISU to coach a second rate program like UM.

The only guy on that list who would even consider coaching here would be Flip and he has zero college recruiting/ coaching experience. People were so quick to run Tubby out of town without realizing that we are not a destination for these next great young coaches. 5 out of 6 years were 20 win season... and while the Big 10 season left us disappointed it was still a step up from most conference seasons we have had. It was disturbing to see the fan base get caught up in the media driven Fire Tubby stuff. I hope it works out, but I think we may soon realize what a good thing we had and got rid of.

Why would Fred H leave a city where he is "The Mayor" to go to a more difficult situation. I'd love to see virtually any of those names come here -- but why would they. It will be very difficult to replace Tubby's integrity, which is supposedly one of the athletic Department's values. By the way, Forbes magazine rates the financial status of the U basketball program number 11 in the country - so we can financially compete with virtually anyone...and need to build a practice facility to compete: Step Up Gopher Alum, don't just whine.

Kevin McHale would be on the list if he wasn't already coaching the Rockets. Saunders is heads above the rest.

I'd look at Mike Leaf from Winona State. Multiple D-2 national times, he's built an elite program down in Winona.

Any body that close to Izzo has to know how to win in the Big Ten. Although the guy that went to Arkansas fell flat on his face in the SEC/Stan Heath....I'd say this guy atleast knows how to win in the Big Ten....his first job...hire him.
