In the end, Norwood Teague made the right call. The only call, truthfully.

Excellent Analysis! Go Gophers!

What makes me absolutely sick is that Pam Borton has failed miserably in Teague's criteria of why he fired Tubby. Yet, she gets a contract extension! Compare Borton to Smith over the the last six seasons. Borton is worse in taking the women's program down. Look at her lack of Big Ten success, Lack of NCAA appearances, no national ranking, failure to land big in-state recruits. the first two high school All-Americans from Minnesota in years are headed elsewhere, attendance down, interest and confidence down, high school coaches loss of respect for the program. I could go on and on. Why don't our women deserve "a fresh set of eyes" on their program.

Makes sense from Teague's position. Let's see what he goes for. Flip? Smart? Tim Floyd? Carlisimmo? Coach K? Yeah, I'm just throwing names for fun, but it's interesting to see what direction they go.

Scoggins put the facts out - guess some folks can't stand that.

Ah Yes! Once again social media solves the world's problems---OK, just sports in Minnesota.

"He had to swallow hard and pay Tubby $2.5 million"? Chip, Teague isn't paying Tubby a dime, if he was, Tubby would still be the coach.

Maybe your memory is much better than mine, Chip, but how many national championships have the Gophers won? Two of our best programs were crooked (Musselman and Haskins). We also had the sexual assaults. Gopher basketball has not been viewed as a positive for many, many years. Tubby at least btought credibility.

Great analysis, Chip. Tubby should be get our respect, but clearly it was time for a change. I give Teague credit for rolling the dice and firing an iconic name who was putting out a mediocre product. Change foe the sake of change is almost never good, but that's not what I see happening. If Teague has a strong suit, it Basketball, and I fully expect to see a great hire that completely re-energizes this program and propels it from above-average to excellent.

Gotta love that optimism: "it's not a destination job, but it could be!" Put yourself in Teague's shoes for a moment. Suppose you're trying to make a "big splash" type of hire in order to energize the fan base. What do you tell a prospective coaching candidate who might have other legitimate offers that would convince them to take this job? Do you tell them what great fans we have? Do you show them the "plans" for a new practice facility? Do you point to the team's track record of recent successes? Or all of the big money donors who might contribute to such an effort? Optimism is fine, but it needs to be paired with substance and credibility. All I see right now is an AD selling hope.

Coaching in the big 10 is attractive enough, that is why we have 25% of the Sweet Sixteen teams in the NCAA tourney. Add a practice facility to the U of M, and the program will attract big recruits, including all the Minnesotans that run off to other places. Teague will figure this out; we just need fewer blowhards whining about payouts, etc. College sports are now an arms race, and it's keep up or bag it altogether. Call you state rep if you don't like the payouts, just please quit whining.
