Gambling firms drove flawed Minnesota e-pulltab funding plan

The botched projections showing that electronic pulltab sales would explode in Minnesota and immediately start paying for a new Minnesota Vikings stadium were based largely on estimates made by gambling businesses with a vested interest in the new but untested form of charitable gaming, the Star Tribune has found.

Take a look at the odds on these electronic pull tab games. There are about 7,000 "tickets" in these games compared to approximately 3,00 to 3,750 in regular pull tab game. But there are not twice as many winners int he electronic games. So, why would I play the electronic game if I wanted a chance to win?

Senator Julie Rosen was convinced that electronic pull tabs would provide the needed funds for Viking Stadium. When questioned what happens if the gambling did not provide the needed funds during Senate hearings, she said that they WOULD provide the funds. She was continually asked, OK, but WHAT IF they dont? She had NO contingency plan. If I had had a presenation like that to my senior management, with no contigency plan, I would have been fired. How do these people get elected? (And I am a Republican, like allegedly Senator Rosen is).

I was for the Vikings stadium, but this strikes me as good investigative reporting to reveal some real flaws with the funding mechanism from the beginning.

So let me get this straight. People who wanted to sell a product, and those who wanted to sell a stadium paid for by proceeds gained by said product, overinflated their estimates of how much these gaming devices would make. This group then ignored those who actually had some idea of what the outcome would really be, and now they are trying to figure out what went wrong? Well, idea failed folks. Hey, Vikings, need a ride to the airport?

Revenues less than 5% of what was predicted is reason for an investigation and total elimination of the funding source to be replaced with another. If they are replacing 95% of the funding source, might as well go all the way and eliminate the electronic pulltabs considering they hoodwinked the public with their erroneous, greed driven estimates.
