Ailing San Onofre nuclear power plant seeks summer restart, considers new strategy

LOS ANGELES - As part of an effort to convince federal regulators that a nuclear reactor is safe to restart, the operator of the shuttered San Onofre nuclear power plant in California has disclosed it might push for a rewrite of the facility's operating rules.

Sounds kind of like an old car that's no longer safe to drive at 70 MPH, but instead of having it repaired, you just slow down to 55 and hope it doesn't break down. Except that this isn't an old car, it's an old nuclear power plant! I'm no anti-nuclear activist, but unless they can be SURE this power plant won't break down and dump radioactive water into the environment, I'm going to have to take the activist's side in this case.
