The play on Malkin was not clean ! The defender had his free hand on the inside of Malkin's left shoulder and gave him a push to send him off balance and his momentum carried him into the boards. The free hand used in this manner is HOLDING !! The NHL is still allowing blatant charging, as in way too many steps and leaving the feet to deliver a late hit(interference) while punching with both hands(roughing) while the stick is in the(flag position or crosscheck postion) air. Keep in mind that it is only legal to check a player who is in possession of the puck with your hips and shoulders while taking only 2-3 steps for the purpose of separating your opponent from the puck. Please don't write this nonsense as kids like to emulate NHL players and you can take video from every NHL and use it to show kids "HOW NOT TO CHECK" !!! Case in point: Parise's crosscheck from behind 5 minutes into the last Colorade game that sent him headfirst into the boards. He was 10 feet from the puck and the refereee was looking right at it with NO CALL !!!! The brutallity at the NHL level is approaching the Roman Colliseum in the day !!!!! The officiating has been a joke at times !!!!!! There will be a catastrophic injury or fatality in the NHL before the owners get their act together and stop worrying so much about season ticket sales and start worrying about their players along with their players families !!!!!!!

Shanahan doesn't have great leeway as the Department of Player Safety. As soon as Shanahan laid out some tough suspensions last year the NHL cracked down on him as demonstrated by the pathetic 4 game suspension to repeat offender Kaleta and totally ignoring the blatant head shot on Coyle by Kronwall and the Nash flying elbow to the head of Kopeckey. If Shanahan had any integrity and actually cared about player safety he would do his job as it was intended instead of just going through the motions. As it stands now, Shanahan is just Colin Campbell with video.
