Gender imbalance in visa program deserves scrutiny

New rules should encourage more highly skilled and educated women, as well as men, to live and work in America.

This sounds like a solution in search of a problem. The article says nothing about the number of skilled and educated women who APPLY for work visas, only that there are more skilled immigrant men than skilled immigrant women working here. Also, wouldn't the gender neutral "spouse" not being granted work visas hold true for married men as well as women? This problem cannot even be defined as a problem without a lot more information.

owatonnabill, You stole my thunder! I read this. Stopped and re-read wondering, "What's the issue?" So, I will defer to an alternate response to the article. The principle that some people have way too much time on their hands!

Women in Saudi Arabia need their husbands permission to leave their country. Many countries have the same types of laws. If women apply for a visa they are considered just like any other applicant. The problem is, many women are not permitted to apply and we have no control over that.

It evens out; women live longer than men. I never hear any call for scrutiny about that fact.

What's so terrible about saying that something doesn't look right and we should ask why?

jgmancini, To respond to your question, suggest looking up "Bloom's Toxonomy" which essentially states having/observing information is one thing. Digesting and moving on the information is another. People generally look at information myopically and do not consider and/or link other factors (stakeholders). Consider TV news events where young children are asked a very basic question. The masses hearts go pitter/patter becuse it was a child but ask a child continuous/linking questions, and the child is lost. The ability to manage/utilize information is what seperates the masses from leaders. Stated differently, "If one is not part of the solution, they are part of the problem!"

jdlellis1--suggest you look up "scientific method". Which begins with asking a question, and then systematically and objectively researching the question. This article asks "why are most visa holders men?" and then suggests "maybe we should investigate why" One can't manage/utilize information until one actually acquires the information. And only very poor leaders think they already know the answer to every question. In other words, if you aren't willing to look at the problem, you are part of the problem.

jgmancini, do not disagree with your premise. However, the author is not providing any insight into potential considerations. Thus the publication falls short of any deeper or as you express systematic thought which is what Bloom's Toxonomy provides.
