Souhan: Twins hurting in bullpen, and have a shaky rotation

  • Article by: JIM SOUHAN , Star Tribune

Aaron Hicks is fast enough to play center field for any big-league team, but with the Twins, speed may not be enough. Considering the mess that is the Twins’ pitching staff, Hicks might need a bicycle and a helicopter.

THE beginning of the season is suppose to be exciting, but since i am talking about the twins I am laughing.I have been a twins fan over 40 years and just shake my head the way RYAN runs things.LUCKILY for me the twins will always be my favorite team ,but I also like many other teams to watch to take away the pain of the twins.

I blame this on you guys in the press. You are finally seeing past the paper tiger on 2013 but you are still doing it for 2014 and 2015. Just because the pathetic Twins farm system now looks much stronger does not even come close to guaranteeing that the Twins will be contenders in 2014 or 2015. You are letting Terry Ryan off the hook for the horrible job he has done in 2013 and assuming that the prospects are all going to be All Stars in the next few years. There is a very good chance that Sano, Arcia, Buxton, etc never make it to their potential and these hard throwing prospects never make it either. Think back at how many upper 90s hard throwers in the past never turned into the pitcher that every "expert" predicted. A combination of promising prospects and opportunistic free agents is what is needed to build a perennial champion. Please stop being such wimpy reporters. What would the New York or Boston press be doing to Terry Ryan and the Pohlad's if they tried to pass of a team like the Twins have for 2013, 2014 or 2015???

2015? And who replaces Justin Morneau and Josh Willingham in that line-up? Then, when "all that pitching" finally arrives, you'll have gaping holes in your line-up. And it's not like Terry Ryan is going to spend money on anyone. The problem with this rotation is that your boy, Jim, Terry Ryan himself, is so arrogant beneath that Dudley Dooright facade believes that his utter neglect of this pitching staff over the past two offseasons won't doom this team. Why? Because he's Terry Ryan, boy genius! At least, according to guys like you. If TR had paid attention to this starting staff and spent some of that $35M he cut from Bill Smith's payroll on it, we might be looking at a pretty competitive club. But, no, Terry Ryan wants to pretend we still play in the Metrodome and it's 2001 all over again. The Little Train that Could. Aint that cute.

I do not have good memories of last Spring when most of the Twins starters were out of the game by the third inning. I see a lot of that happening this Spring too. I like Deduno as well, but he will probably revert to form during the season. I don't think he makes a good reliever who has to avoid putting men on base. So if he makes it will be as a starter. As others have said, Correia is this year's Jason Marquis. Everyone else is hurt. At least we are not hearing the "we will be competitive" from Twins management this year. And we may get a house cleaning by the All Star break to see some of the new talent.

Terry Ryan is Kevin McHale and Doug Riseborough all rolled up in one inept incompetent GM.

Interesting thing about prospects. They can only give you a chance to be better at a later date. Consider Scott Baker and Kevin Slowey. Seven or eight seasons ago those two were untouchables to the Twins. At the time we had Torii, Johan, Joe and Justin all at once and we should have attempted to surround them with better talent RIGHT THEN. It would have involved the risk of "mortgaging the future" but propect by definition only means chance or possibility. They could have supported good young hitters with a some solid veteran players if they dealt prospects at that time. They should have. I know I wanted them to. I believe that if you have enough core young talent under team control for a couple of years why not? Ask Terry Ryan.

The pitching could be as bad as last year. However, I think a lot of people are ignoring the offense. There are really only four 'take it to the bank' professional hitters on this team. This roster will have lots of weak hitters and neophytes. The lack of depth there shouldn't go unnoticed either.

"Seven or eight seasons ago those two were untouchables to the Twins." Its not like they were a complete bust. We don't get to game 163 and two of the division titles without them. Deduno either needs to be considered a strong candidate for the rotation or needs to be traded for something good. His value would appear to be quite high right now. The idea that he should be in the pen because of throwing a lot of pitches as a starter is absurd. Let him throw as long as he can and THEN bring in Correia instead of the other way around. At least while Deduno is riding high. Regardless of the pen I would be thrilled to have Deduno throw 5 quality innings each start. Correia isn't going to throw any more innings than that anyway. The difference will be the better score after 5 innings. Worley, Pelfrey, Diamond, Deduno and DeVries with Gibson, Hendriks, and Correia waiting in the wings in that order.

Deduno's ininings should count more than spring training because the games meant more and he excelled.
