This is sad. I could write a book on all the reasons this is wrong. With only 6 teams in the Big 10 it's not going to have much rivalry. It also sucks that Mankato and Bemidji got left behind in the "new" WCHA. Those schools worked hard to get to D1 status and are now in an "also-ran" conference. Why didn't the remaining WCHA schools just stay and invite Western Michigan and Miami to join them? Makes no sense. There was a sense of "home" with the WCHA. Even if the Gophers were playing at CC on a cold winters night it still felt familiar because you'd get to see kids you remember from high school. For a sport that doesn't get much cred already, NCAA hockey just shot itself in the foot big time. I'm sure the fans will just flock to BTN to catch hockey now. That is if you can find room for them on the schedule between volleyball reruns. It's just another thing that $$ has ruined.

Disgusted.... We currently play Michigan, Michigan State & Wisconsin. I'm supposed to get excited about watching Penn St instead of North Dakota?

Go Gophers!

This is truly disgusting. It's money driven and horrible for the fans. I waited YEARS for the chance to purchase Gopher season tickets, and after two years, I won't be renewing. I have no interest in going to Tuesday night 8pm games to watch us play teams like Ohio St and Penn St. Lucia has gone on about how this is "good for college hockey." Most misguided thing he's ever said. Get used too half-capacity conference games at Mariucci, because I have a feeling that's what's coming.

I'll try and refrain from commenting on the irony of Parise's statement about it "being a money-making thing" (ahem, $98 million??). Although I loved his reaction to the new conference that was formed - "The what?" - that made me laugh. I agree that you can't force rivalries. Perfect example, as much as the NHL tried to create rivalries, how many die-hard hockey fans REALLY cared about the supposed rivalry with Vancouver? Or Calgary? And to try and state there was actually a rivalry with Colorado, I would laugh at that! Honestly, the games against any of those teams weren't much more to me than a game against the Devils. It just didn't compare to the rivalry of the North Stars against the Blackhawks, Blues, or Red Wings.

Hate this B10 hockey thing. Terrible idea and frankly I hope it fails so in a few years they can reform the WCHA. Penn St hockey?? Please ... they couldn't beat Hill-Murray.

Point is, so instead of games each against rivals like North Dakota, and against quality opponents like Colorado College and Denver, we get to watch Ohio State, and Penn State?? The Ohio State which has had 3 winning seasons in the past 10 years? And had made the NCAA playoffs a grand total of 6 (SIX!) times in its long and storied history? And then Penn State - a team that until a couple of years ago was designated a CLUB sport? And was considered to play at about a D-III level?? umm... well that definitely seems like it's going to be a great rivalry. (yes, sarcastically stated). Wow, can't wait for the Gophers to start conference play in their new league. And even though the Gophers will try to still play games against St. Cloud State and UMD, there won't be the intensity and/or meaningfulness of the games since those games won't affect each respective team's standing in their conference. I'm not sure how much more money the U will be making if the games are only half-sold at Mariucci.
